Vitamin D The Sunshine Vitamin
Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, has proven to partake a great role in one’s health. Popularly acquired through taking in enough sun or drinking enough milk, vitamin D is more than for healthy bones. It was found to conserve muscle strength and can be protection for certain diseases.
What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D dissolves in and is stored in fat. Sources of vitamin D include sardines, salmon, fortified foods like milk, breakfast cereals, and vitamin supplements. It is also created in the skin when exposed to sun. It affects various processes including the regulation of calcium.
Benefits of Vitamin D
Vitamin D helps in the regulation of cell growth, immunity and energy metabolism
Vitamin D prevents leg / muscle weakness. Leg weakness is a symptom for vitamin D deficiency. Researches showed that persons who have high concentrations of vitamin D tend to have decreased susceptibility for muscle weakness.
Vitamin D decreases the risk of developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Studies found that the incidence of MS was lower in places near the equator thus abundant vitamin D.
For healthy bones! Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium from the food. Rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, both described as softening of the bone is associated with Vitamin D deficiency.
Beyond bone protection, vitamin D has also been found to have promising effects to guard against diseases such as colon, breast and colon cancer.
It was found that children who had vitamin D supplementation were less susceptible to developing type 1 diabetes.
How much Vitamin D should you take?
The recommended amount of international units of vitamin D per day is between 200 to 600 IU, for children and adults up to age 50, 200 IU, up to 400 IU for adults aged 51-70 and 600 IU for adults over 70. However, most people do not even reach that range.
During summer, this amount is easily attained because the body can create 12,000 IU from just thirty minutes of sun exposure. Then again, it is hard to reach this recommended amount during winter times because people just acquire vitamin D from food. In addition, those who live further from the equator find it difficult to get enough vitamin D.
With the exceptions of people with the history of skin cancer or conditions related to sun exposure, moderate UVB exposure is a part of achieving the right amount of vitamin D in the blood.
It is worth mentioning that UV light is carcinogenic. Thus, protection from the sun is always necessary.
There is no need for prolonged sun exposure to stimulate abundant vitamin D production. Vitamin D experts say that for a mere 10 minutes of sun exposure a couple of times a week would produce thousands of units of Vitamin D.
The Sunshine Vitamin
Many dietary supplements are available in the market. Vitamin D is one of them. Although vitamin deficiency can be a concern, remember that too much of something is not also recommended.
The best advice would always come from your doctor. Consult your doctor and ask for recommendations on which brands to buy, if you choose dietary supplements, what other supplements he can recommend, and perhaps a meal plan that could maximize your vitamin intake.
Remember that the proper nutrition, right amount of exercise and enough rest is more important than dietary supplements.
Respond to Your Customers
Booz Allen Hamilton does a study of innovation each year at the largest corporations in the world hoping to describe what works and what doesn’t. The study reinforces some basic advice for product design:
- Pick your target market, both in terms of whom you are targeting and when you plan to bring the product to market
- Study first-hand the problems they face or that you believe they will face in your target time-frame
- Design your product to solve at least one problem
When you already have a clear idea you can better serve your potential customers, unfortunately, your ideas are rarely what customers really want. To reach maximum value you need to respond to the behaviors of customers when they assess your products and services. One of the often overlooked sources of information is your website. By looking through your web analytics and comparing to how your site presents information you can find insights that your customers would never think to share with you.
One of the best ways to improve your results is to have a professional look through your website to make sure you have appropriate analytics and lay out a framework for testing. There are some great boutique companies that specialize in conversion optimization, changing your site to better drive sales and inquiries. These companies will help set up A/B testing and the like to make sure you are giving your customers what they really want.
Remember, if you serve your customers they will serve you.

Coral Calcium - Risks to Consider
Coral calcium is an appreciated dietary supplement, but using dietary supplements are always connected to risks. Using too much dietary supplement, combining several types of dietary supplements or combining dietary supplements with other drugs - prescription drugs as well as over the counter medicine - can produce severe side effects. This article will highlight some of the risks of coral calcium use and explain why excessive use of coral calcium supplements can produce adverse effects.
It is important to remember that coral calcium differs from pure calcium supplements. Coral calcium contains a wide range of other minerals in addition to the calcium. One of the most popular coral calcium supplements, Okinawa coral calcium grains, will for instance contain no more than approximately 25 percent calcium. The rest of the coral grain consists of other compounds and up to 70 different compounds have been found in Okinawa coral grains. If you combine coral calcium with other dietary supplements that contains the same compounds, you can therefore risk an overdose.
Some of the most important minerals to consider are iron, zinc, manganese, magnesium, potassium and selenium. Combining coral calcium with dietary supplements containing these minerals can manganese be dangerous. If your diet contains high amounts of one or more of these minerals, you should also be careful. It is always recommended to consult a licensed health professional and discuss your use of dietary supplement. This is especially important if you are using other dietary supplements, prescription drugs, over the counter medicines and/or traditional remedies. Another important thing to keep in mind is that many manufacturers of coral calcium supplement add large amounts of vitamin D to their product. Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption and if you suffer from a lack of vitamin D your body will not be able to benefit from the calcium supplement.
One of the minerals mentioned above is zinc. The amount of zinc in coral calcium varies and carefully reading the label is therefore advisable. If you consume too much zinc, you can harm your immune system. Even comparatively small doses of zinc, around 100 milligrams a day, can hamper your immune system over a longer period of time. Doses exceeding 300 milligrams can harm the immune system even during short time use and have also been linked to lowered levels of “good cholesterol” (HDL cholesterol) and anaemia.
High doses of magnesium should also be avoided. Coral calcium from Okinawa commonly contains 12 percent magnesium and should therefore not be combined with magnesium supplements unless prescribed by a licensed health professional. If you consume too much magnesium, you can develop digestive problems, especially diarrhoea.
The manganese found in coral calcium can also cause an overdose if combined with manganese dietary supplements or a diet extremely rich in manganese. If a woman consumes too much manganese, she might develop PMS problems and her menstrual cycle can become shortened. A manganese overdose can also produce nausea, muscle tremors, dizziness, migraine headaches and insomnia in women as well as in men.

Health Food Supplement - Add Flax Seed to Your Diet and Enjoy the Benefits
What is flax seed?
First I will tell you what it can do. Number one, adding flax seed to your diet can fight cancer. It will help to regulate hormones and thus lower the risk of hormone sensitive cancers like prostate and breast cancer. Flax seed is grown in cold climates like Canada and the North Midwestern States. The cold weather allows the seeds to grow rich in omega-3 fatty acid. The omega-3 provides the core nutrients of the flax seed. The seeds are great sources of protein, fiber and lignans but the real health benefits come from the omega-3. A few of the tests that have been done with flax seed show increase in sensory perception. Several studies show that flax seed can be a cholesterol-lowering agent. Flax seed can also provide relief from constipation and can increase the performance of your digestive system.
How do you use it?
Flax seed is a small brown or golden seed that is about the size of two or three sesame seeds. Flax seed does have a harder texture so it needs to be ground up before consumption. Due to its high oil content it grinds easily and can be put on just about any food. Many people sprinkle it over salads or put in yogurt or your morning cereal. There are many great free recipes that are available to cook with flax seed. For the first time user of flax seed there are starter kits available that are priced low and you can usually get 3 pounds of flax seed, a how to book on how to include it into your diet and a flax seed grinder all for about $30. The flax seed has a rich nutty taste to it and if you use 100% certified organic flax seed the nutty taste is rich and can really taste good. It is commonly added to sports drinks and shakes.

What Are Nutraceuticals and Why Are the Drug Companies Upset?
If you break the word apart, Nutra has to do with nutrition, and Ceuticals has to do with drug companies - pharmaceuticals. So what is the big deal? Nutraceuticals are god-given nutrients that are readily available for our good health, but drug companies want to make them illegal to buy and use - unless they can sell them to increase their bank accounts.
Another word you need to know is CODEX (the European Food Supplements Directive). The purpose of Codex is similar to Nutraceuticals. The government wants to control supplements so that we are made totally dependent on doctors, drug companies and the government.
Your first response is “What the heck does Europe have to do with me? I live in the US.” Well, this is one of the first steps in controlling healthy things - supplements, vitamins, minerals, and healthy foods. If it is successful in Europe, they (multinational governments) will bring CODEX to the US.
So, what will CODEX do to us?
- It makes people think that nutritional supplements are unsafe while it diverts attention away from the toxic side effects of prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs.
- It will create higher prices for healthy supplements to force people to rely on expensive drugs covered by insurance companies.
- With a decrease of stores selling supplements, the better it is for medicine (drug companies and doctors). With less sources for healthy alternatives, there is less competition with prescription drugs.
- It starts legal control of not only healthy supplements but also control of nutritious foods that help prevent disease - grass-fed chemical-free beef, chemical-free chicken, and non-chemical healthful plants like broccoli.
- There will be arrests of advocates of natural health - supplement makers, and retailers. These people will no longer have a voice.
- It will stop the production of new supplements by making manufacturers go through hoops and/or millions of dollars for
approvals of God-given nutrients.
- It will set a precedence for making nutrients illegal. And then each year a few nutrients will be taken off the market. It
has happened to L-tryptophan and ephedera. There was a problem with L-tryptophan. There were two versions - one naturally
made here in the US and a genetically engineered version from Japan. The Japanese version caused a serious blood disease
where a few died and many got very sick. The chemical boys (also known as drug companies) saw a way to get rid of
competition. They also did not want the public to know that anything was wrong with genetic engineering of foods and
drugs. With this in mind, they got the FDA to ban all L-tryptophan. For the most part, no one knows if ephedera has done any harm or if it’s so called bad effects was because of some combination that was not investigated - on purpose. Remember well, Viagra killed more people in the first year it was on the market than all the supplements in the last one hundred years.
- Outlawing nutrients that prevent disease will continue to create people who are diseased and with poor nutrition. Without
supplements, they will have to turn to expensive toxic drugs - they will not get well, but it will be perceived that something is being done.
Remember: Unhealthy Soil = Unhealthy Plants and Animals = Unhealthy People
Also: If the Maker didn’t make it, we shouldn’t eat it - prepared foods, toxic drugs (make no mistake we need some drugs but not the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, drugs for cholesterol and pain pills).
We need more doctors who know how to find the cause of disease and help us eliminate the causes instead of covering up the symptoms with drugs - like pain pills for arthritis.
Now you know what Nutraceuticals and CODEX represent. Someday you will need to contact your congressman, congresswoman or your senator to stop the chemical boys from killing us. The only thing we have is our voices. The chemicals boys have more money to pay for political campaigns than we can imagine. Remember, Democrat or Republican is not the issue because both sides have been bought and paid for with the millions of dollars of profits made from selling us expensive drugs that don’t work or make us more ill.

3 Things You Want to Know About Cholesterol
You wouldn’t judge a book by its cover, would you?
You would want to open the book and read part of it to get a better idea about what is going on, right?
Well, judging a book by its cover is what happens when you look at LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and decide that this is the only - or even the best indicator of heart disease.
Worse yet, you are told you MUST lower your LDL cholesterol level.
#1 Naturally produced by the body, cholesterol is needed for a variety of functions.-1
Your body uses cholesterol to make testosterone and other essential hormones and is one of the best health and youth enhancing strategies for aging men and women. -2
As you age your body naturally starts to lose its ability to produce as much testosterone and you start to lose energy, strength, sexual desire and sexual capacity.-2
#2 Because the fact is cholesterol alone is not THE indicator of heart disease. Cholesterol which has been oxidized is the problem. Oxidation of cholesterol is the more specific problem which would enable the cholesterol to become “sticky” and start to form plaque in the walls of the arteries.-3
We have all seen an apple cut open and watch as it turns brown - this is oxidation. Your body will oxidize on the inside unless steps are taken to help prevent this.
One can keep oxidation of cholesterol in check by incorporating plenty of anti-oxidants in your consumption of food and supplements.-1, 3
A few of the most powerful anti-oxidants are:
- CoenzymeQ10
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
Low cost, safe and proven food sources high in omega 3’s and the right fats to help keep your cholesterol levels in balance-1, 3
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Olive oil
- Olives
- Almonds
- Walnuts
- Flaxseed
- Eggplant
- Okra
- Eggs
- Fresh fruit
These are better, safe, proven and natural ways to prevent cholesterol from becoming a problem.
A diet heavy in grains and processed foods will actually raise your blood cholesterol levels more than foods which contain cholesterol.
A diet low in cholesterol will do you little if anything health wise -4
Focusing on raising your HDL cholesterol levels because as you raise your good cholesterol it decreases the concern about your LDL levels of cholesterol and gives you a better total cholesterol profile. -5
Some of the best ways to improve your “Good” or HDL cholesterol is through:
- Exercise.
- Vitamin D
- Niacin
- Moderate alcohol consumption is associated with raising HDL cholesterol levels - 6
There is a big difference between the cholesterol your Body produces and dietary cholesterol from the food you eat.
#3 Two factors which are of greater concern and are better indicators of heart disease are -3
1. A measure of inflammation in the blood stream called C-reactive protein
2. An amino acid produced by the body called homocysteine.
High levels of C-reactive protein and high levels of homocysteine are better leading indicators and also contribute to the formation of plaque in the blood vessels leading to heart disease -3
As reported in the July, 2003 issue of JAMA, a study was conducted which showed that a diet high in plant sterols, fiber and almonds was clearly the better way to reduce cholesterol and heart disease over statin drugs.-8
And finally …
Policosanol - An organic plant alcohol from sugar cane is one of the best natural ways to reduce bad cholesterol levels-7
Naturally, as you realize the power of these proven ways to prevent cholesterol from becoming a problem, you will find yourself taking action.

Stoke Your Body’s Furnace With Low Carbohydrate Food
Though there are many different low carbohydrate diet plans, they are based on the same principles. When carbohydrates (such as starches and sugars) are consumed, the body’s blood sugar level rises. To counteract high blood sugar levels, the body releases insulin, which in turn increases fat storage and decreases the body’s ability to burn fat.
When a low carb dieter restricts carbohydrates, his or her blood sugar is only slightly raised, thus preventing excess insulin production. But many low carbohydrate dieters’ hopes are ruined by uncontrollable sweet cravings, hypoglycaemic mood swings, hunger urges and lethargy.
The truth about carbohydrate is that too much carbohydrate provides too many Calories and probably also has certain negative effects on blood glucose and insulin levels. Despite this however, the body must still have a minimum amount of carbohydrate (as glucose) to stay alive.
Although the brain and nervous system normally want the most glucose, these organs can get along without it in a pinch. But that’s not true for certain blood cells and other types of cells. They must have a steady supply of glucose, because without it they’ll quickly die.
For this reason, glucose is so important that your body will begin to make the glucose it needs for these cells out of muscle protein if it doesn’t get enough carbohydrate from food. But, although possible, this is a stressful emergency reaction (called ketosis), which also makes you miserable with hunger, cravings, and many other unpleasant sensations. Obviously, dieting would be much more successful if we could avoid all that.
When your body runs low on any nutrient it needs to stay healthy, it naturally triggers hunger to make you go get it some more of that thing. But if you habitually eat foods that have too little of whatever it’s running low on and too many Calories, you’re going to get fat from this reaction.
Fortunately you can lose the weight again by simply reversing the process. To do so, you learn to eat things that have lots of what your body needs but not many Calories. When you succeed at this your body has no reason to trigger hunger and food cravings even when you’re eating very few Calories and it’s burning excess fat (stored Calories) to make up for this.
This reaction is as true for carbohydrate as it is for each of the other nutrients. If you eat too little carbohydrate, your body will trigger hunger because it needs a minimum amount of glucose every day to supply the cells that can’t use anything else.
If you eat too much carbohydrate, you’ll get fat because too much carbohydrate has both too many Calories and the aforementioned negative effects on blood glucose and insulin levels. So how much is “enough but not too much”? That amount is probably highly variable depending on your lifestyle. A stressful “go-go” day can require a lot of carbohydrate while a relaxed day probably won’t. However, most scientists put the minimum amount of carbohydrate that most people will need in the range of 50-100 grams per day (which is 200-400 Calories from carbohydrate). This is the amount that prevents your body from starting to make glucose out of muscle protein.
Since most food labels list the amount of carbohydrate in the food you eat, tracking and controlling amounts is not difficult. Try to eat in the range of 400 Calories from carbohydrate per day. This will usually prevent the hunger and cravings that are triggered by too little glucose.
There are several other nutrients that also trigger hunger and cravings when you get too little of them - and which must therefore also be managed similarly.

Foods That Help You Prevent Osteoporosis
All of us should be concerned with our bone density. Strong bones will make your life healthier and disease free as you age. Discover a few foods that are important for preventing osteoporosis.
The food you eat will determine the health you have. Having good eating habits is necessary for good health and for preventing osteoporosis.
Here is a list of good eating habits that will help you maintain or improve your bone density.
* Eat less fat
* Eat more fiber
* Eat more calcium rich foods
* Use less salt and sugar
Eat less fat to prevent osteoporosis
Studies have determined that when you have high cholesterol, you have fewer cells that build bones. The building of your bones is a continual process of bone breakdown and bone buildup. If you have more bone breakdown activity than bone build up, you will end up with low bone density.
High cholesterol comes from eating to much saturated fat. So here is where you can improve your bone regeneration by eliminating or reducing these saturated fat containing foods
Eat less meat and look for more lean meats. Turkey has less saturated fat than chicken or beef.
Eat less dairy products such as milk and cheese. These products are high in saturated fat.
Eat more oils that contain omega-3 (fish oil), omega-6 (olive oil) and omega-9 (found in avocados.) Do not cook with these oils since they breakdown at high temperatures creating high levels of free radicals. Cook with coconut oil. This oil does not breakdown at high temperatures. Coconut oil is high in saturated fat but it is a short chain fatty acid, which is good for your health. But, butter has saturated fat that contains a long chain fatty acid, which is bad for you health in excess.
Eat more fiber to prevent osteoporosis
Again by lowering cholesterol, you can improve the density of your bones. Lower your cholesterol by eating more fiber. Most people do not eat enough fiber. The best fiber to eat is in bran, fruits and vegetables - oat bran, rice bran citrus fruits, apples, figs, beans, strawberries, etc.
Eat more calcium rich foods to prevent osteoporosis
Most people need to get at least 1000 mg of calcium every day. Some people need more. To get this amount of calcium, you should take a daily supplement and eat those foods that are rich in calcium - yogurt, fig, tofu, boiled collards, cottage cheese, boiled kale or spinach, broccoli, all dark green vegetables.
Eat less salt to prevent osteoporosis
Eat less salt since salt and calcium compete to get absorbed in the small intestine. If you eat too much salt, calcium will not get absorbed and will be flushed into the colon and out your body. When salt gets into your blood, it attracts water. This causes your kidney to flush this excess water out as urine. When you urinate more than normal, you will be flushing out calcium and minerals that your body needs.
There you have it, a few ideas to start using so you can prevent osteoporosis. Eat less saturated fat, eat more fiber, eat less salt, take a good calcium supplement, and eat more calcium rich food.
