Social phobia, also called social anxiety disorder, involves overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. It seems that everyone has advice lately about relationships. Some of the advice is good, some of it is just rehashed poetry. I’ve been around the block a few times and I’ll show what some of my findings have been.

1. If you approach a woman in a setting such as at a party, bar, or whatever; If she says no, you might as well leave. Do not go any further. Do not ask another woman out in that place. You are blackmarked. It is over! You will not find another woman in that place. It sounds silly, but its the gospel. Just don’t do it.

2. If you’re shy approaching women tell yourself in your mind that you are the greatest lover in the world. Go to the bathroom and say it to yourself in the mirror, if you have to. Just get it in your head that you are the greatest and it will radiate to others.

3. Do not be something that you are not. Do not pretend to be a player if you’re not. You’ll look dumb. Real players do not go up and play the card you see on tv. Most women with intelligence can spot a phony, and you will be labeled as such if you put on a front. The best way to approach a woman is with the classic, “How’s your night?” This also works well, “How was your day?” Women love it when a man shows an interest in their well being.

4. Treat the woman like she’s the only lady in the world. Ask her questions about her job, pets, just things like this. Do not ask too personal of questions in the beginning. Just become friends.

5. Make eye contact. A woman knows how to melt a man with a certain look of her eyes. Do not wear sunglasses. Glasses are ok, if you have to wear them. Just don’t cover up your eyes. This is real important.

6. Know the flirting signs. Learn that when a woman plays with her hair, it means she’s enjoying your company. If she touches you, touch back. Don’t go overboard with the touching. If she brushes you, “accidentally” brush her back. If she “accidentally” kicks your feet, bump back. It’s all a game. You have to know how to play it.

7. Do not take phone calls during your conversation. Turn the phone on vibrate or just turn it off. I guarantee, if you don’t want a second chance with her take the phone call. It’s one of the rudest things that you can do. Do not talk on the cell phone.

8. When the woman takes a drink, you should take a drink. Try to build a rhythm. The more insync you become, the more chemistry there will be.

9. Take a genuine interest in her. Repeat her name before you ask a question. Make her think that she’s the one, right now.

10. The best way to seal the deal is with the classic, “How’s a guy like me gonna get to know you more?” Do this after the chemistry has started. Don’t do it in the beginning. You have to close with this and she’s all yours.

I would have titled this “For Under a Quarter” but I knew that no sane editor or e-zine publisher would have even have bothered to open the article.

How often have we received holiday gifts that someone, who cared about us, made themselves? I look forward at this time of year, to homemade candies, and cookies, but not pound cakes. In many families, making presents has become a tradition that, once started, the gift maker had better not beg out of. When diversifying an investment portfolio, one needs to consider investing in the healthcare industries. Pharmaceutical companies that have strong pipelines of investigation drugs have strong growth speculations. In addition to examining its pipelines, one also needs to be able to evaluate the results of its clinical trials. When a news program reports the results of a clinical trial for a new drug to be “statistically significant,” what does it mean? And how did they come up with that conclusion? One of the most important values to look for when interpreting the results of a study is the P value.

Elenbaas et al defines P value as “the probability that a type I error has been committed, and that the null hypothesis has been falsely rejected.” Let’s briefly talk about the null hypothesis, type I error, and type II error. Lets say a new drug A is being compared to a currently available drug B. The first assumption that investigators will make is that the new drug A is equivalent or is equal in efficacy to the currently available drug B. This assumption is called the null hypothesis (H0). A contradicting assumption to the null hypothesis is the alternative hypothesis (H1). H1 says that the new drug A is more effective than the currently available drug B. In fact, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is what the investigators want to prove because the pharmaceutical companies developing the new drugs fund most of its clinical trials. Type I error occurs when H0 is rejected when it is really true. In other words, investigators believe that the new drug A is more effective than the currently available drug B (rejecting H0), when drug A is equal in efficacy to drug B, or worst, not as effective as drug B. Type II error occurs when H1 is actually true (drug A is more effective than drug B), but the investigators failed to reject H0 (did not reject the hypothesis that drug A is equal in efficacy as drug B).

With the technical terminologies defined, lets go back to the P value. To reiterate, P value is “the probability that a type I error has been committed, and that the null hypothesis has been falsely rejected.” (Elenbass et al). The P value is said to be “statistically significant” when it is < 0.05. For example, a clinical trial comparing the effectiveness between drug A and drug B, found that drug A worked better at lowering the blood pressure than drug B, and the P value was calculated to be 0.04. This means that there is a 4% chance that a type I error is being committed (investigators falsely believe that drug A is more effective than drug B, when they are equal in efficacy). 0.05 is the largest acceptable P value in clinical literature. When investigators claim that drug A is more effective than drug B, they were correct 95% of the time, with only less than 5% chance error.

There are many other important statistical values, but they are beyond the scope of this article. Now, whenever a reporter on television reports the results of a clinical trial for a new drug to be “statistically significant,” one can perform their own verification by obtaining a copy of that study and look for the P value.

A few years ago I read a statistic that said that genealogy was the second largest hobby in the United States - second only to gardening. It was no surprise to me as I have been finding and documenting my family tree for almost 30 years. Over that time a lot of people have asked me, “Why genealogy? What do you get out of it?” There are a lot of reasons to find out about your family and I’ll cover just a few hoping that one of them will get you started.

Curiosity: A lot of people are just plain curious about where they came from, what their ancestors did, how they got here - to this time and this place. Lots of people find themselves in this category when they are told that they are adopted. While they have adoptive parents, traditions, and history, they also have another history that calls out to them. Other people have lost touch and are curious about where people are, how they turned out, who they married.

It’s a Great Puzzle: This applies to me in several areas of my life besides genealogy. I have worked with numbers a lot - particularly with market research. I just love understanding what motivates people to buy certain products, where they shop, how much they want to pay, and where they want to hear about those products.

Emotional Satisfaction: This is a huge reason for being involved in genealogy and one that I hear repeated by other people as they talk excitedly about their latest discovery. There are moments that happen during a search that are touching and immensely satisfying. This is the moment that you look at your great grandfather’s signature on your grandparent’s marriage license; put your hand on the baptismal font where your oldest known ancestor was baptized; stand on the ground where your great grandfather from the old country is buried - knowing that your grandmother stood on this spot in front of an open grave grieving her loss. These moments are thrilling, goose-bump producing moments of a life time when you can almost reach across time and touch a person who you finally understand and know. This is a moment you must not miss!

Give Something Back: Lots of people get involved when they volunteer at their local genealogical or historical society.
